Since 2009
Vega Tapas Cafe opened on Royal Street to bring the pace of a Spanish tapeo night — small plates, shared, one after another — to a city that already knew how to eat that way.
How We Cook
Our paellas are built exclusively on bomba rice, imported for its ability to absorb broth without going soft — the same grain used in Valencia.
Shrimp, oysters, and fish come from Gulf waters, prepared with the techniques of Andalusia and Galicia rather than substituted for imported stock.
Nearly a third of our menu is vegetarian by design, not as an afterthought — a tradition tapas bars have carried for a century.
The Block
Royal Street sits inside what was New Orleans' Spanish colonial quarter, governed by Spain from 1763 to 1803. Much of the ironwork and courtyard architecture still visible in the French Quarter today dates to that period, rebuilt under Spanish rule after the fires of 1788 and 1794. We didn't choose this address by accident.
